Dillon Dingler delivered a three-run homer to cap a five-run eighth inning, and the Detroit Tigers stormed back late to beat the slumping Los Angeles Angels 10-4 on Thursday night.
Javier Báez and Gleyber Torres each hit solo home runs in the third, and Spencer Torkelson added a two-run shot in the ninth as Detroit erupted for eight runs over the final two innings. The Tigers improved to 20-12, the best record in the American League, while the Angels dropped their sixth straight.
Following the game, the Angels announced that star outfielder Mike Trout will be placed on the 10-day injured list due to a bone bruise in his surgically repaired left knee.
Detroit starter Casey Mize (5-1) allowed four runs on seven hits over seven innings. He gave up a solo home run to Logan O’Hoppe in the second and a two-run shot to Jorge Soler in the third.
Down 4-2 entering the eighth, the Tigers sparked a rally. Torres led off with a single off Ryan Zeferjahn, who had pitched a perfect seventh. Manager Ron Washington brought in lefty Reid Detmers (0-2), who walked Riley Greene and allowed an RBI single to Andy Ibáñez. A misplay in center field by Jo Adell allowed both runners to advance. Zach McKinstry followed with a game-tying RBI single, and Dingler crushed a 409-foot blast to left field for a 7-4 lead.
Torkelson’s ninth-inning homer highlighted a three-run outburst to seal the comeback. Dingler and Torres each finished with three hits for Detroit.
Angels starter Yusei Kikuchi lasted five innings, surrendering two runs on five hits while striking out five.
Trout was batting .179 with nine homers and was sidelined after exiting Wednesday’s game in Seattle with left knee discomfort. He has had multiple surgeries on that knee, limiting him to 29 games in 2024.
Key Moment
Báez, playing center field, made a leaping grab at the right-center wall in the fifth inning to rob Soler of a potential home run.
Key Stat
Soler’s homer in the third was only the Angels’ second multi-run homer since April 10. Of their 43 home runs this season, 33 have been solo shots.
