Tomoyuki Sugano tossed 7 1/3 stellar innings, Gunnar Henderson homered and tripled for two RBIs, and the Baltimore Orioles halted their five-game losing streak with a 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night.

Sugano (4-2) baffled Angels hitters with a six-pitch arsenal, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out five without issuing a walk. He threw 93 pitches, 65 for strikes, in a commanding performance.

Yennier Cano relieved Sugano in the eighth and worked out of a jam. After allowing a single to Jo Adell and walking pinch-hitter Jorge Soler, Cano battled through a 13-pitch at-bat against Zach Neto, ultimately striking him out on a 95-mph sinker.

Closer Felix Bautista struck out two in a perfect ninth for his seventh save.

Henderson got Baltimore on the board early with a first-inning solo shot off Kyle Hendricks (1-4). The Orioles tacked on two more runs in the second when Jackson Holliday drove in a run with a single, and Emmanuel Rivera added an RBI hit to make it 3-0.

Hendricks went five innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits, with five strikeouts and three walks.

The Angels got on the board in the seventh when Yoán Moncada tripled and scored on Taylor Ward’s groundout, but that was all their offense could muster.

Key Moment

Reid Detmers, looking to bounce back from a disastrous stretch, entered in the sixth with two on and none out. He struck out Jackson Holliday, got Ramón Laureano to fly out, and induced a lineout from Rivera to escape unscathed and keep the Angels within reach.

Key Stat

Henderson’s homer ended a 16-game streak in which the Orioles had failed to score in the first inning.

Up Next

The series continues Saturday with Orioles RHP Kyle Gibson facing Angels RHP Jack Kochanowicz.
