Los Angeles Angels superstar Mike Trout has been named as the team’s nominee for the 2024 Roberto Clemente Award, one of MLB’s most prestigious individual honors. The Roberto Clemente Award recognizes the MLB player who best represents the game through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field.
Each year, one nominee is named from each of the 30 MLB teams and fans are given the opportunity to vote for who they feel should win the award. The fan vote accounts for one vote in the final tally put together by a blue-ribbon panel of experts.
Fans can vote at MLBTogether.com/clemente21 in English or Spanish and give their favorite player a better shot at taking home this highly-anticipated award for the 2024 season.
Trout was nominated for his work with both children battling terminal illnesses and suicide prevention.
“Trout makes regular trips to local hospitals to brighten the days of children battling life-altering illnesses, fostering an atmosphere of love and support for kids and their families coping with unimaginable hardships. Many more across the country have received messages of encouragement from the 11-time All-Star,” the MLB press release says.
“After the passing of his brother-in-law, Aaron, in 2018, Trout and his wife, Jessica, are also involved with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, bringing a personal touch to their work to reduce the stigma that prevents many individuals suffering with mental health issues from seeking support.”
Trout has been nominated for this award in the past, but is yet to win. In fact, the Angels are one of seven teams to have never won the award since its inception in 1971. The other six are the Kansas City Royals, Colorado Rockies, Miami Marlins, Texas Rangers, Toronto Blue Jays and Washington Nationals.
Voting is open until Sep. 29 and the winner will be announced alongside the other major awards at the end of the season.
