Kyren Paris belted a go-ahead solo homer on the first pitch he saw after a lengthy weather delay, helping the Los Angeles Angels rally to a 3-2 win over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday.
Paris, a 2019 second-round draft pick, launched his first home run of the season — and just the second of his MLB career — following a 2-hour, 48-minute rain delay in the seventh inning. His blast broke a 2-2 tie, proving to be the difference.
Kenley Jansen secured the win despite a shaky start to the ninth. He allowed a leadoff double to Andrew Vaughn and walked Matt Thaiss before retiring Miguel Vargas on a pop-up. Brooks Baldwin then grounded into a game-ending double play.
Mike Trout notched his first hit of the season in the opening inning, helping the Angels load the bases. Jorge Soler followed with a sacrifice fly, and Yoán Moncada drove in another run with a groundout to give Los Angeles a 2-0 lead.
The White Sox tied it up early. Nick Maton led off the bottom of the first with his first career leadoff home run, and Luis Robert Jr. scored on a two-out single by Thaiss to make it 2-2.
Key Moment
After the delay, reliever Ben Joyce took the mound for the Angels with two runners on and one out. He walked Vargas and threw a wild pitch, putting the go-ahead run on third, but escaped the jam with a flyout and a popup.
Key Stat
Chicago’s starting pitchers didn’t allow an earned run during the three-game series. Davis Martin threw six innings of two-run (unearned) ball Sunday, following scoreless starts from Sean Burke and Jonathan Cannon.
