Joe Ryan struck out a season-high 11 batters over seven dominant innings and the Minnesota Twins shut out the Los Angeles Angels 5-0 on Sunday, completing their first three-game sweep since last August.
Ryan (2-2) allowed just four hits and one walk while finishing one strikeout short of his career high. Justin Topa handled the final two innings without allowing a hit, helping the Twins notch their second shutout of the season, with Ryan as the starter.
Ty France delivered a run-scoring double and Ryan Jeffers followed with a two-RBI double in the sixth inning, chasing Angels starter José Soriano (2-4). France added a sacrifice fly in the first, and Trevor Larnach contributed an RBI single in the seventh.
Carlos Correa had a three-hit day, including a double. He went 6-for-11 in the series and has raised his season average to .211.
Soriano was charged with four runs (three earned) over five-plus innings as Los Angeles dropped its third straight and fifth in the last six games.
Luis Rengifo recorded two hits for the Angels. Mike Trout batted leadoff for the first time this season but went hitless, continuing a slump that has dropped his average to .170.
First baseman Nolan Schanuel sat out after exiting Saturday’s game with a bruised right knee. He is considered day-to-day.
