Mike Trout simply has not been able to catch a break when it comes to injury news. He has been no stranger to the injured list over the last few seasons, playing in just about 41.0% of possible games for the Los Angeles Angels between 2021-24.
So far this season, he had remained healthy, with the hope being that a move to a corner outfield position would preserve his health throughout the season. But in Wednesday’s loss to the Seattle Mariners, Trout exited early after suffering a knee injury while sprinting to first base.
The Angels star underwent testing, which revealed no structural damage. That ruled out any concerns of a long-term injury, but the Angels are still placing Trout on the injured list with what they are calling a bone bruise in his left knee.
Angels manager Ron Washington spoke about the injury and the decision to place him on the 10-day IL, via Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com:
“He has a bone bruise so we’re going to put him on the IL,” Washington said. “It’s not significant. But he needs rest.”
Trout had not looked like the superstar we’ve come to know in the first month of the season regardless. He had an OPS of .727 with 36 strikeouts in his first 121 plate appearances. He had an OPS+ of just 102, which is above replacement level but would have by far the worst of his career outside of his very first season of just 40 games played.
Perhaps, if this is a short injury stint, it can serve as a bit of a reset for the Angels star to get his bat back on track.
Angels lose to Mariners in Mike Trout’s exit
Crawford delivered a go-ahead two-run single during a six-run seventh inning as the red-hot Seattle Mariners rolled past the Los Angeles Angels 9-3 on Wednesday. The win marked Seattle’s seventh consecutive series victory, while the struggling Angels lost their fifth straight game.
Seattle continues to surge, winning four straight and 15 of their last 18. Emerson Hancock allowed three runs on nine hits over six innings, while Casey Legumina (2-0) earned the win with a clean seventh inning.
Leo Rivas went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and Randy Arozarena hit the Mariners’ fifth home run of the season. Jorge Soler also homered in the win.
Reid Detmers (0-1) took the loss for the Angels after entering the seventh and allowing five runs without recording an out. Starter Tyler Anderson exited with the game tied.
