Nolan Schanuel delivered a clutch RBI double in the 11th inning, helping the Los Angeles Angels edge the New York Yankees 1-0 on Monday night and hand the AL East leaders their fourth straight loss.
Schanuel’s one-out drive to left off Yankees reliever Jonathan Loáisiga (0-1) scored Christian Moore, who began the inning as the automatic runner. Moore, a Brooklyn native, had tripled in the eighth for his first major league hit in front of a home-state crowd.
Ryan Zeferjahn (4-1) tossed a clean 10th for the Angels, while Brock Burke worked into trouble in the bottom of the 11th. With the bases loaded and two outs, Hunter Strickland entered and got Anthony Volpe to ground into a forceout, securing his first save of the season. The Angels improved to a perfect 5-0 in extra-inning games, while the Yankees fell to 1-5.
New York’s offensive slump deepened as they managed just one hit in 18 chances with runners in scoring position and have now scored only five runs over their last five games. Their 20-inning scoreless streak continues to fuel their season-worst slide.
Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton debuted his season after a 70-game absence due to tendon inflammation in both elbows. He went 2-for-4 with a single and a ninth-inning double. That double sparked a near-scoring chance until Angels third baseman Luis Rengifo made a highlight-reel tag on pinch-runner Jasson Domínguez, colliding and tumbling over the baserunner.
Both starting pitchers were strong. Clarke Schmidt allowed just four hits across 7 2/3 innings and retired 16 batters in a row during one stretch. Angels right-hander José Soriano countered with seven scoreless innings of six-hit ball.
Key Moment
Christian Moore, a 22-year-old second baseman and former Mets fan, was thrilled in his first visit to Yankee Stadium. He lined a triple over Aaron Judge in right field for his first MLB hit and later scored the winning run. He also made a defensive gem, throwing out a runner at the plate from second base in the 11th.
Key Stat
The Angels remain the only team in MLB this season to have used just five starting pitchers.
