Landen Roupp delivered a career-best performance with nine strikeouts over seven solid innings. Matt Chapman’s two-run homer powered the San Francisco Giants to a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday night.

Roupp (2-1) scattered five hits and allowed two runs in his 96-pitch outing, relying on his sharp curveball to generate 12 of his 18 swinging strikes. He now leads the majors with 42 whiffs off breaking balls this season. Tyler Rogers pitched a clean eighth, and Ryan Walker closed it out in the ninth for his fifth save, stranding the tying run at second by retiring Nolan Schanuel.

Chapman provided the early spark, sending a changeup over the left-field fence for a two-run shot in the first — his fourth of the season. Mike Yastrzemski doubled in the third and came around on Willy Adames’ RBI single to push the Giants’ lead to 3-0.

Mike Trout accounted for all of Los Angeles’s offense, hitting solo home runs in the fourth and sixth innings. The multi-homer effort was the 28th of Trout’s career, extending his franchise record and giving him eight long balls, second only to Oakland’s Tyler Soderstrom.

Angels starter Kyle Hendricks (0-2) lasted five innings, surrendering three runs on four hits with one strikeout and two walks.

Key Moment

In the bottom of the ninth, Trout nearly hit his third homer of the game, but Giants outfielder Heliot Ramos made a leaping grab at the left-center field wall to rob him and seal the win.

Key Stat

The Angels have struck out 89 times and drawn just eight walks in their last eight games, spanning 71 innings — a troubling trend at the plate.

Up Next

The series wraps up Sunday with Angels left-hander Yusei Kikuchi (0-3, 4.13 ERA) facing Giants right-hander Justin Verlander (0-1, 6.75 ERA).
